Nedumbassery: Eyeing to corner a share in the emergent market for aircraft maintenance services in the country, Air India has announced its plans to set up two mainframe MROs (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) in association with Boeing and Airbus Industrie.
An official statement by the airline said that it was in discussion with Boeing to set up an Airframe MRO in Nagpur.
The venture, part of Boeing’s commitment following the deal with Air India in December 2005 for the purchase of 68 new aircraft, would meet all the requirements of customary maintenance for the Boeing aircraft of both Air India and Air India Express, besides other airlines in South East Asia.
It also plans an expansion in its business portfolio by building up an MRO unit for narrow body aircraft with Airbus Industrie/Indian Aero venture apart from seeking to set up a GENX/GE90 engine repair facility in association with General Electrics to have a branded services agreement for the aircraft’s engines
Air India has engineering facilities in Mumbai and Delhi that ensure the ‘airworthiness’ of all the aircrafts in its fleet by carrying out preventive and corrective maintenance apart from taking up a few third party jobs.
Recently, these units have been restructured into two specially built unit MROs for airframe and engine and components.
Part of its existing facilities is recognised as certified repair shops by the aviation regulators including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the USA and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
