Kochi: India is giving much importance to the satellite navigation system and plans are on to develop a system based on global positioning augmentation which would essentially help in aircraft operations, a senior scientist said here today.
“To start with, we are talking about a space based augmentation for the Global Positioning System. We call it ‘Gagan’…Which would essentially help in aircraft operations or precise landing system. We are working with the Civil Aviation Ministry in devising the system based on the GPS Augmentation”, Dr K Radhakrishnan, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, said.
The Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System (IRNSS) would be in place in another three years, he said after inaugurating a two-day All India Seminar on ‘innovations in electronics technology for futuristic communications’. Advances in communication has led to the world becoming a smaller place and one of the major contributors to this revolution has been space, he said.
As of now the country has got 210 transponders and by the end of the 11th plan, there would be around 500 such transponders, he said
