Fly-by-summer fares take a deep plunge

Bangalore: It’s an absolute summer slam. A one-way ticket from Bangalore to New Delhi at Rs 2,521 with taxes; to Mumbai at Rs 1,972 inclusive of taxes.
Summer travel has got dirt cheap as some airlines drop their basic fare prices to a maximum of Re 1, at times even dispensing with it. And some are doing away with the fuel surcharge or dropping the price by around 40%. But you can avail of all these benefits only if the tickets are booked 30 days prior to the date of travel.
These summer special fares are also 20% to 30% cheaper than what was on offer last year. The reason is that air travel is still reeling under a demand slump. Travel agents estimate that for the January to March period, air travel from Bangalore has dropped by 15% to 20% as compared to the same period last year.
Most airlines have these offers on for bookings made until April 30. Leading the summer slam are low-cost carriers such as IndiGo, SpiceJet and Go Air, some of which have dropped their basic fare prices to 0 or Re 1.
SpiceJet is offering a Re 1 fare from Bangalore to Mumbai for travel in May, which after adding the fuel surcharge and the passenger service fee adds up to Rs 1,972, inclusive of taxes.
The full service carriers like Kingfisher and Jet Airways too have dropped their basic fare price to Rs 200 on certain routes like Bangalore to Chennai for bookings made one month in advance.
An IndiGo one-way ticket to New Delhi for travel in May is priced at Rs 2,521 inclusive of taxes, as against the going rate of Rs 4,821 that is being quoted.
Public sector Air India is only charging the basic fare plus the passenger service fee for tickets purchased 30 days in advance.
